چکیده

The potential for a gliding UAV to sustain flight by dynamically soaring in a hurricane is investigated. Leveraging extensive storm observations, the wind profile of the hurricane eye is modeled as a continuous function that is zero at the center and increases as a power of the radius. We then derive the equations of motion for a UAV flying in this wind field, and prove analytically that if the wind field exponent n = 1, dynamic soaring is not possible. This analytical result is also validated in simulation. We also provide extensive simulation results for the case where the wind field exponent n > 1. These results indicate that dynamic soaring is in fact possible for such storms, and the velocity gain for a single dynamic soaring cycle is correlated with the wind field gradient.

Closing the Loop in Dynamic Soaring

This paper examines closed-loop dynamic soaring by small autonomous aircraft. Wind field estimation, trajectory planning, and path-following control are integrated into a system to enable dynamic soaring. The control architecture is described, performance of components of the architecture is assessed in Monte Carlo simulation, and the trajectory constraints imposed by existing hardware are desc...

Optimal dynamic soaring consists of successive shallow arcs.

Albatrosses can travel a thousand kilometres daily over the oceans. They extract their propulsive energy from horizontal wind shears with a flight strategy called dynamic soaring. While thermal soaring, exploited by birds of prey and sports gliders, consists of simply remaining in updrafts, extracting energy from horizontal winds necessitates redistributing momentum across the wind shear layer,...

Experimental verification of dynamic soaring in albatrosses.

Dynamic soaring is a small-scale flight manoeuvre which is the basis for the extreme flight performance of albatrosses and other large seabirds to travel huge distances in sustained non-flapping flight. As experimental data with sufficient resolution of these small-scale movements are not available, knowledge is lacking about dynamic soaring and the physical mechanism of the energy gain of the ...

Dynamic Soaring of Sailplanes over Open Fields

Dynamic soaring of a sailplane in the earth’s atmospheric boundary layer was computationally investigated over a range of conditions to explore the feasibility of flying over a large vertical extent over open fields. A point-mass sailplane model was studied as well as a full six degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) piloted sailplane model. For the point-mass model, parameter sweeps were performed around a...

Optimal Energy Extraction During Dynamic Jet Stream Soaring

Dynamic soaring, a technique in which horizontal wind that varies in strength or direction is used to support flight, could potentially support perpetual flight of a high performance glider in the jet stream. However, the aircraft's control systems would still require electric power. This could be extracted for example using specially designed ram air turbines (RAT). The present paper focuses o...
